Single Fin Sickle Flex 9.5" - Carbon Black

If you looked up “mid length fin” in the dictionary there is a good chance you would see this fin. As the name suggests, this curvy and bladey single fin is built ready to reap. The idea here was to create something compatible to ride with a variety of boards to keep things spicy and enjoyable. That variety refers to mid lengths, mini malibus, hull shapes, gliders, eggs and more from roughly 7’ to 9ft.

Recent reports were that the 8’4” Gato Heroi Space Pig (their Wayne Lynch tribute model) matched beautifully with the Sickle Flex fin. The board was built for doing carvey turns and big bottom turns in all types of surf and the fin facilitated this nicely in French surf.

Some say choosing a fin with the 1 inch of fin per foot of board rule doesn’t always apply. This is a general rule but some might find that a 7” fin for a 7’ board might still feel a bit squirrely and loose. Some might need to add side bites, others might try for something bigger.

In the case of the Sickle Flex fin, yes it is 9.5” long which seems quite lengthy for a mid length. But the drawn out rakey tip thins down quite a lot and does not have a lot of surface. This allows more freedom in the wave face that coupled with the flex makes it much looser than it looks. Pushing through a turn is when you really feel the flex attributes of this fin.

The wider fin base gives nice boost and drive balancing out the looseness with stability. In all, a fun balanced fin for midlenghts that can handle a variety of wave conditions.

Even if you are not at the stage of cutting back or hard bottom turns this fin still performs. Surfers having trouble turning will enjoy the more lively feel this brings a board.

Longboarders who want a lighter quicker rail-to-rail feeling will enjoy this fin too. It might not be the ideal noserider fin but this is still possible with the right balance.

The Sickle Flex is not your traditional fin shape although it will work with a variety of household name shapes.
